Daily stand-up meetings and pair programming helps software developers at Sectra when working from home

What is working from home like for a software developer who is used to agile planning and close teamwork? The impact of COVID-19 has changed the daily routine for Sectra’s development teams. In this interview, Tova Linder shares her experiences. She is a Software Developer and Agile Coach at our Product Development department who joined Sectra in August 2017.

I always appreciate working with healthcare, but in recent months, every single helpdesk ticket I have solved has felt even more meaningful than usual.

Sectra: Has your work routine in the spring of 2020 changed?

Tova: It strikes me that our way of working really has not really changed much at all despite the transition to home offices. We use the same tools and processes as in the office, with minor modifications adapted to working in a remote setting. For example, our daily stand-up meetings are held over a video conference call in Microsoft Teams, sharing our digital Kanban board. Another example is the huge amount of pair programming we have carried out from home. Live share features in the code editors have been utilized much more extensively than when working in the office.

It feels great to be part of such an adaptable organization. With that said, I really miss “fika” and having spontaneous hallway chats with my colleagues on a daily basis. My colleagues are the best, and I really miss having them around. The attempts to fill the gap of social interaction with virtual “fikas”, virtual after-works, outdoor lunches etc. have been amazing, but nothing can really beat the day-to-day interaction, chats, and laughter we have at the office.

What does it mean for you to be able to do your job despite the challenges facing society in the past couple of months?

Healthcare staff across the globe are doing an incredible job in tackling the COVID-19 situation (they always do an incredible job, but even more so now!). If we can make an impact and make their days a little more efficient, this makes me beyond happy. I always appreciate working with healthcare, but in recent months, every single helpdesk ticket I have solved has felt even more meaningful than usual.

Would you recommend Sectra as an employer to a friend and, if so, why?

Yes, definitely. Normally when I get this question, I talk about the culture and the exciting projects we work on. In a time like this, I would like to highlight some other aspects of working at Sectra. The global situation is turbulent and many of us have concerns about health, family, etc. I am fortunate and grateful to work at a stable company where work life can continue almost as normal. The communication plans and guidance from senior management have been great throughout this period.
