Meet Johan Uppman, Software Engineer

What made you apply for a position at Sectra?

Johan UppmanMy journey at Sectra started with a summer job at Sectra Communications and after that I was hooked. There were two reasons for this; the main reason was the people at Sectra, and the second was the challenge of intricate technical problems. When I say the people at Sectra, I mean the culture and atmosphere. You can always discuss problems and solutions with your colleagues and superiors, everyone is happy to help each other, and all employees are striving towards the same goal. I have always liked to solve difficult puzzles, so the intricate technical problems that arise when creating secure products were something that I found very stimulating.

How long have you been working at Sectra?

In the summer of 2011, I had a summer job at Sectra. That summer job had several different aspects: some system design, some FPGA development and some software development. In the spring of 2012, I did my master thesis at Sectra, which mainly involved creating a design and implementing it in an FPGA. In June 2012 I started working full-time as Software Engineer at Sectra. During the first one and a half years I worked with FPGA development. After that I worked with software development mostly for microcontrollers, smart cards and smartphones. I have in other words been lucky enough to try out many different things during my years here at Sectra.

What do you do on a typical day at work?

It is quite hard to define a normal day at work since the development process for both software and FPGA involves a lot of things. Some of the things I do are designing modules or units, coding, testing, reviewing code, and reviewing documents. These things may not sound that interesting when presented like this, but what makes it a lot more fun is that I do this in collaboration with my whole project team. This means that I get to be involved in the whole development process and not just sit in a room and work on my own small unit or module.

What are you most passionate about?

The first thing that comes to mind is solving tricky technical problems together with colleagues.

How would you describe Sectra as a workplace?

I would describe it as a place where competent people work together to create high-quality solutions. There is definitely individual responsibility. You do not get an assignment telling you exactly what to do; coming up with a solution is part of the job and you do so in collaboration with your teammates.

Why would you recommend applying for a job at Sectra?

Working at Sectra is very stimulating and fun. You get to work with competent and collaborative colleagues to solve difficult technical problems.
